EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing of traumatic experiences
With trauma, an unconscious experience can affect the present moment – as if it were happening right now.
Some events in our lives shake us and hurt us deeply. They overwhelm us. They leave us no choice. They push us to our limits. We are unable to process them – they traumatize us.
Experiences are normally stored in an interconnected way in both hemispheres of the brain. We remember the experience with its emotions, physical sensations and sensory impressions (right hemisphere) and the knowledge of time, place and logic (left hemisphere).
In the case of trauma, however, the memory is stored separately, in fragments. As a result, health problems can manifest both emotionally and physically. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) may develop. Panic attacks, sleep disturbances or depression can be signs of an “unconscious trauma.”
